The Longarm Quilting Process
Longarm quilting is a process of taking a pieced quilt top and layering it with batting and a backing to make the quilt ‘sandwich’. It is then quilted with a sewing machine that has an extra deep sewing area called the throat, allowing larger, more intricate patterns than with a home sewing machine. With a longarm machine the fabric layers are held between rollers and the machine is moved, rather than moving the fabric like with traditional home sewing machines.
The patterns used to sew the layers together (the quilting process) can be anything from simple line drawings to complex, intricate designs. As with the quilt pattern, the quilting design is a personal artistic preference, selected to compliment the overall appearance of the finished quilt. The selection of the quilting design can be left to the machine quilter or determined jointly with the quilt owner.
